Panasonic HDC-SD5

The camera records video with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 30 fps, and it records on SD or SDHC cards.

Design

The Acer Aspire L310 E63W is a neat and elegant looking hardware. After easily installing the desk-stand in under a minute, the cabinet can be placed standing or sleeping on the table; there are rubber-feet placed on one side of the CPU, and also under the desk-stand to prevent it from scratches.

The cabinet has a silver and chrome finish with off-shades of grey which makes for a nice a combination. The ventilation for the small components is taken care of completely by the steel meshes in the front and on the right side (when you're facing the front of the CPU) closest to the processor housing. The front of the cabinet comprises of the slot loading DVD Writer. Thankfully, there is an eject button provided, so you don't have to face troubles as seen with Macs.

The ports on this side are orderly tucked behind a flap. On the same side, the chrome lines hold LEDs that denote Network Activity (LAN/WLAN), Disk Activity, and Power on.

Performance

The overall performance of the Acer Aspire L310 E63W wasn't too satisfying. Even though it has a Core 2 Duo processor, there is no way that will alone boost the performance of the computer. It is an over all combination that matters. In this product's case, just a measly 512 MB of RAM, that too shared with the on-board graphics, making the Aspire L310 E63W quite sluggish. We opened about 6 windows along with tabs, toggling back and forth between them left the computer frozen at times. The system comes bundled with Windows XP Media Centre Edition. While using this OS, scrolling and listing of songs and video took time. I had to wait for names and album art to show up.

Coming to games, the on-board graphics from the Intel 946GZ chipset is not even worth mentioning. It's best to stick to games like Quake 3 and Counter Strike which don't demand much of graphics. Don't expect 100 fps in CS either. If you add another 512 MB of RAM, the system would have been better to a great extent in most of the other applications, if not gaming.

Conclusion

The Acer Aspire L310 E63W (less the monitor) sells for Rs. 41,499 plus taxes with a 1 year onsite warranty. Here, the price basically shoots because of Core 2 Duo. There are AMD versions of the same available, which are reasonably priced. The same configuration, with an AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ processor, and an nForce 6150 chipset motherboard can be fetched for 30K. There is also a full blown version available with a TV Tuner, Vista Home Basic, and a wireless keyboard and mouse that will cost 36K, which is still lesser than this Intel option. But even all of these come with just 512 MB of RAM, there is only one option from the series that is Linux loaded, and has 1 GB of RAM priced at 30K. So as you can see, only the AMD options seem to make sense here. As for this Intel version, I wouldn't want to opt for it even if it were bundled with another half a gig of RAM. The price of RAM is at an all time low and Acer should seriously consider bundling 1 GB to complement the other quality hardware they use. That would boost the performance significantly and in turn, its value.

Nokia is about to Announce a Black 8GB N95

Rumor has it that Nokia is due to announce an 8 GB version of N95.Well, it’s not really a rumor as it’s on Nokia’s own site, however it’s not yet announced. The upped memory would make it more competitive against Apple's smartphone, as the top iPhone model boasts an 8GB capacity, as will Sony Ericsson's top of the range Walkman phone, the W960. The rumours, which began when an xml file suggesting an 8GB model was spied on the Nokia website, are also suggesting that this version would be touted as a special music edition and would come in black.

The Personal Carbon Calculator on Your Mobile

A personal carbon calculator is one of the winning projects of the BSI Sustainability Design Awards 2007.
Andreas Zachariah, a student graduating with an MA in Industrial Design Engineering and the first accepted to study at the Royal College of Art (RCA) with an MBA, is one of this year’s winners of BSI’s Sustainability Design Awards 2007 for his “Carbon Hero™” personal carbon calculator.
Carbon Hero calculates the exact carbon footprint of the user’s transport habits by identifying different forms of transport taken as a user travels through ‘space’, by virtue of their relative location, velocity and the pattern of their activity. All of this comes in a unit the size of a key ring.
Once gathered, the data is downloaded to software on a PC or mobile phone which displays the amount of carbon used and the amount of credits needed to be purchased in order to offset the amount used.
Andreas comments “In an age where consumers are making purchasing decisions based on their environmental impact there’s no reason why they shouldn’t make the same choice about transport, be it public or private, on a daily basis. Online methods for calculating personal carbon footprints fall down on the fact that they rely on the use to estimate usage. Carbon Hero™ uses sophisticated sensors to pinpoint usage thus giving a much more accurate assessment of the user’s impact on the environment”.
With the availability of detailed information provided by Carbon Hero, the user can choose to change their transport habits to reduce their impact on the environment, or offset usage through carefully selected projects.

Mobile TV for Nokia Eseries devices

ROK TV today announced that it is offering live and on-demand mobile TV streamed over existing 2.5G and 3G and networks as a subscription service aimed specifically at the users of Nokia Eseries devices.

OK Entertainment Group, a leading mobile technology and applications development company and a specialist in the provision of mobile TV, has been appointed by Nokia to provide the service which is available via the Downloads! Service on selected Nokia Eseries devices.
ROK TV is available in the UK now and will subsequently deploy into mainland Europe from August onwards
Commenting on the plans, David King, business development manager, Enterprise Solutions, Nokia said "Nokia Eseries customers tend to be professional people who seek instant information and entertainment, on-demand, so it is a logical and practicle step to offer our customers a business-orientated mobile TV service."
"We're absolutely delighted to be working with Nokia on this exciting deployment of mobile TV" said Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman of ROK. "As we know there is a huge and as-yet untapped market for live and instantly-available business and financial news amongst mobile TV customers."
ROK TV is available via the Downloads! Service on such devices as Nokia E61i and Nokia E65, initially, which the owner simply needs to activate to begin watching the services. Two channel packages will be offered - a 5 channel 'Strictly Business' package, to be charged in the UK at £5.00 a month, with a heavy emphasis on business news and information channels such as Bloomberg, CNBC Europe and regional news channels, and a 10 channel 'ROK All' TV package, to be charged at £10.00 a month containing all the live business news channels as well as additional sports news, music videos and comedy channels. As a trial, both TV packages will be free to view for the first 2 weeks.
"We are only targetting this service directly to those Nokia Eseries customers who have a data package in their mobile tariff to ensure subscribers do not pay additional data charges to their network operators." added Kendrick.
ROK TV requires 10mb of GPRS data per hour of streaming and, with mobile TV viewing patterns being for a few minutes at a time, once or twice a day, the typical monthly viewing duration is between two to three hours.
"We know what the consumers want from mobile TV and we will provide it for them," added Kendrick."We are finalising the last of the content agreements now, to include news channels in all the major European languages.”

Sony Ericsson W999i

The pictures of this alleged model from Sony Ericsson are making rounds around the web. The picture below shows a very similar looking handset to be launched.

The model seems to be the W999i and will hopefully follow the steps of W950i with a smart OS. The phone has a QWERTY keypad, a lift off from Sony Ericsson's M600. Rumors suggest the handset will be of around 12.5 mm thickness and will house a 2 MP auto focus camera. The phone screen will be 2.4-inch and support a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. All this buzz will just have to wait for an official announcement from Sony Ericsson.

Sony Ericsson PSP Phone

Rumors are doing the rounds that Sony Ericsson is vying to get a gaming phone in a head-to-head competition against the N-Gage from Nokia. Rumor has it that it maybe a PSP phone we are looking at; how cool is that? Sony Ericsson has enjoyed success with its Walkman and Cybershot series of handsets.

The success of these sub-brands have been so high that Sony can now go ahead and make a big difference in the mobile gaming sector as well; especially with the PlayStation brand backing it up. So all there is to it is hope that Sony Ericsson will race ahead to the top with such mobiles.

Leopard. Conquer Time & Spaces.

Mac OS X version 10.5 “Leopard” is the name of the upcoming sixth major release of the Mac OS X operating system for Apple's Mac line of personal computers. It was shown to developers for the first time at the 2006 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). It is currently available to Apple Developer Connection subscribers for private beta testing. A feature-complete beta version was distributed to developers at the 2007 WWDC. The final release is slated for October 2007.

Leopard contains over 300 changes and enhancements, according to Apple. Some notable features include support for writing 64-bit graphical user interface applications, an automated backup utility called Time Machine, support for Spotlight searches across multiple machines, and large revisions to most core operating system components.
Mac OS X v10.5 has been the subject of a delay. When first discussed in June 2005, Apple CEO Steve Jobs had stated that Apple intends to release Leopard at the end of 2006 or early 2007. A year later, this was amended to "Spring 2007", however on April 12, 2007, Apple issued a statement that its release would be delayed until October 2007 because of the development of the iPhone.

System requirements

The pre-release documentation states the following system requirements:
A G4 (800 MHz or faster)-, G5- or Intel-based Mac

A DVD drive

At least 512 MB RAM

7 GB of hard disk space – 12 GB if Xcode is also installed

The latest Firmware
FireWire Ports

New features

Apple has published a list of the new features and capabilities planned for Mac OS X v10.5:

End-user features

All of the following features, although posted on the Apple website, are said by Apple to be subject to change.

New Desktop: comprised of a redesigned 3-D dock with a new grouping feature called Stacks.

Time Machine, an automated backup utility which allows the user to restore files that have been deleted or replaced by another version of a file.

Front Row and Photo Booth are currently only available with the purchase of a new Mac, but will be included with Leopard. Front Row has been reworked to closely resemble the interface used by the Apple TV.

Spaces, an implementation of "virtual desktops" (individually called "spaces"). It allows multiple desktops per user, with certain applications and windows in each desktop. Users can organize certain Spaces for certain applications (i.e., one for work-related tasks and one for entertainment) and switch between them. Exposé will work inside Spaces, allowing the user to see at a glance all desktops on one screen.)

Spotlight incorporates additional search capabilities such as Boolean operators, as well as the ability to search other computers (with permissions).

Redesigned Finder with features similar to those seen in iTunes 7.

Quick Look, a framework allowing documents to be viewed without opening them in an external application.

Enhancements in Universal Access: significant improvements to applications including VoiceOver, along with increased support for Braille, closed captioning and a new high‐quality text-to-speech voice.

Enhancements to Mail including the additions of RSS feeds, Stationery, Notes, and to-dos. To-dos use a system-wide service that is available to all applications.

Dashboard enhancements, including Webclip, a feature that allows users to turn a part of any web page into a live Dashboard widget, and Dashcode to help developers code widgets.

iChat enhancements, including multiple logins, animated icons, and tabbed chats, similar to features present in Pidgin, Adium and the iChat plugin Chax; iChat Theater, allowing users to incorporate images from iPhoto, presentations from Keynote, videos from QuickTime, and other Quick Look features into video chats; and Backdrops, which are similar to chroma keys, but use a real-time difference matte technique which does not require a green or blue screen. iChat will also implement desktop sharing, a feature previously available with Apple Remote Desktop.

Parental controls now include the ability to place restrictions on use of the Internet and to set parental controls from anywhere using remote setup.

iCal calendar sharing and group scheduling as well as syncing event invitations from Mail.

Boot Camp will be included. It is a software assistant which has been available as a beta release download for Mac OS X v10.4 from Apple’s website since April 5, 2006. It assists in the installation of Windows XP or Windows Vista to a separate partition (or separate internal drive) on Intel-based Macs.

New Menu Bar, which is now transparent and it is no longer rounded, which was a design feature since Mac System 1.0.

Safari 3.0.x will be included.
